Why a WEB site

The interest in setting up this Web site and program is driven by both a concern this children's generation of Sharrock decendants may have lost, or eventually may lose interest in the family's history, and the challenge of building a family tree system for the internet.

The aim

This WEB site is in it's early stages and only an idea I am toying with. It is aimed at providing a means by which everyone can participate in the process of maintaining the Sharrock family tree and then continue to do so over time.
Hopefully it will build on the great work completed by Russell Crole and Bruce Sharrock providing the added benefit the tree being accessible over the internet, thus enabling a wider audience to have the joy of studying all descendants in their leisure. And for all those interested, will pride the capacity continue to grow the tree, as they add their branches and new descendants as family members arrive.

I have started by adding those families in the line of Sharrocks that I, my siblings and cousins have descended from. The idea would be to provide the option for every one to add their piece of the puzzle to our tree, with the view each contribution will help complete the picture.

The WEB site could also serve to publish interesting historical information. We have already scanned the original 1920 article and published as a Web page.

Issues

We may need to have boundaries to the family tree. If there is genuine interest in this project, I would like to discuss issues with a wider audience, such as :
  • Do we limit the tree to only those brothers that arrived in Australia (ie. the children of James Sharrock and Ann Smith )
  • Once a Sharrock family name changes by marriage, only permit that and not successive generations be added to the tree.
  • How much information do we supply. I have deliberately shown birth year not birth date. Should I not include middle names for the same reason?

How to navigate the tree

The family tree provides a number of views. A view provides a list of all Sharock descendants in chronological order others allow the user to navigate their way down the tree of the particular Sharrock pioneer. To navigate, use the "twisties" or blue triangles. After clicking a twisty the next branch on the tree will be revealed. Clicking on subsequent twisities will allow you to drill-down through the tree.

Creating a descendant

the system also allows you to add new descendants to the tree. Before you add a new descendant you need to ensure the parents of the new descendant are already in the tree. It may be necessary to add a number of generations to the tree before you can add you new descendants.
